Superheroes and Superheroines on Superbikes

Over the years, superheroes both in comic and film have sported many iconic vehicles; after all, who doesn’t know about the Batmobile? But did you know that motorcycles have featured as iconic supervehicles too? Here we’ll feature some of the ‘superbikes’ that heroes (and heroines) have rode in on over the years.

Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze) on the Hell Cycle (Marvel)

Model: Panhead Chopper

Appearance(s): Ghost Rider (2007) movie

There have been at least two Ghost Riders, but Johnny Blaze is the one played by Nicolas Cage in the 2007 “Ghost Rider” film, seen riding on his CGI flaming motorcycle called – in the comics – the Hell Cycle. A cheesy name for a pretty cool bike. In the film Johnny rides a Custom HD Panhead Chopper, and the bike is integrated with his backstory in which he is a stunt motorcycle rider collecting contracts for the devil. Of course, the wheels are continuously on fire, creating the epic imagery of Ghost Rider leaving a trail of flames in his wake wherever he goes.

Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) on her Batgirl Cycle (DC)

Model: Modified Yamaha YDS-5E

Appearance(s): Batman (1960s) TV series

Not as cool as the Hell Cycle, perhaps, but classic in its goofiness, Batgirl rides her own 1966 Batgirl Cycle throughout season 3 of the 1960s Batman TV show. It was intended to be a parallel to Batman’s 1966 Batmobile. According to Batmania, it’s likely to be a Yamaha YDS-5E customised by the prop department at Fox Studios. How about that bike lace, eh?

Batman (Bruce Wayne) on the Batpod (DC)

Model: Custom model

Appearance(s): The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) movies

We can’t talk about superbikes without mentioning the utterly mindblowing Batpod from Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy. Anyone who’s seen the movies can attest to its amazingly fluid motion, with its ability to turn 180 degrees on the spot and its startling speed helped by its low-to-the-ground, streamlined build. Apparently six models were constructed for movie production in total.

Batman does ride many other iterations of his own Batcycle in the comics, under many different names, but the Batpod is possibly the most memorable of recent years.

Black Canary (Dinah Lance) on the Canary Cycle

Model: Harley-Davidson Sportster

Appearance(s): Comics throughout the years

To balance out the movie appearances, here’s one from the comics: Black Canary’s motorcycle made for her by Superman. It’s also made appearances in adaptations like Legends of the Superheroes (1979) and Arrow (2012). Due to the fact most artists aren’t bike experts, its appearance has changed slightly from comic to comic, and fans have different opinions on what model it might be; however, most seem to agree it resembles a Harley-Davidson Sportster.

Some special mentions that didn’t make the list:

  • Captain America (Steve Rogers) and his motorcycle in the Captain America films
  • Domino (Neena Thurman) and her motorcycle in Deadpool 2
  • Wolverine (Logan) and his motorcycle in X-Men: Origins
